Changes in Suprahyoid Muscle Activation Based on the Resistance of Therapeutic Elastic Bands Applied During Jaw-opening Exercise
Oh Jong-Chi

Abstract
We investigated changes in suprahyoid muscle activity following the application of elastic bands of various resistance values around the head and the lower jaw to apply systematic resistance as a technique of muscle strengthening exercise. This study included 15 healthy young women (mean age, 21.1¡¾0.7 y). Changes in suprahyoid muscle activity were confirmed using a wireless surface electromyography system during maximal mouth opening by wearing yellow-, red-, green-, and blue-colored bands corresponding to 4 resistance values. Repeated measures analysis of variance tests showed a significant change in muscle activity when wearing the blue band with the highest resistance value compared with the yellow band with the lowest resistance value (p<0.05). This result shows the possibility of providing systematic resistance through the sequential application of bands corresponding to different resistance values based on an increase in muscle strength in the subject. Additional studies are warranted in elderly patients and those with swallowing disorders to effectively use such elastic bands to provide systematic resistance as a component of swallowing rehabilitation.
